Underground Ethical Catwalk with CDC

Nancy Dee Spring/Summer 2010 collection (photo by Miroslav Zaruba)

So sad to miss the recent Underground Ethical Catwalk event hosted by the Conscious Designers Collective (CDC)* in the UK. The lovely ladies at Nancy Dee extended a kind invite, but I am already settled on these shores for Autumn 2009.

This annual ethical fashion show is held in conjunction with The Islington Contemporary Arts and Design Festival and coincided with their weekend long exhibition on fashion and textiles.

CDC participants who unveiled their diverse Spring/Summer 2010 ethical collections included Beautiful Soul, Harvash, House of Tammam, Miksani, and Nancy Dee.

*"The CDC is a group of like-minded ethical designers who support responsible fashion by holding events and helping with networking and suppliers. Ethical fashion is a difficult business to break into and the aim of the CDC is to help new designers promote their work and improve the accountability of their production." - CDC website

Everlasting Hope Sends Up Fresh Shoots

Everlasting Hope's S/S 2010 Drape V-Neck Dress (organic cotton)

Practicing true sustainable style is more than simply expression of 'hope' and 'future-forward' thinking. It requires the right blend of eco materials and design aesthetics as a translation of pure and inspiring vision. Everlasting Hope's Spring Summer 2010 Collection demonstrates some real promise on this front. It's fresh and wearable ~ soft and edgy. Created by the ethical (everlasting) creative duo of Ria Giuliano-Thomas and James Thomas, it's an expression of all the good things that are on the horizon for 2010. Be on the lookout for more fresh new shoots from Brooklyn's hot homespun eco fashion label.

Gift of Hope for Women of the Congo

photo credit Lynsey Addario: Congo/Women Portraits of War

The very inspiring Kerry MacMullin of Green Is Black recently shared this news with me, as her eco boutique in Toronto will be a sponsor for this upcoming, eye-opening event.

Women and Girls of the World will launch its project 'Gift of Hope' this weekend, in an effort to reach out to the silenced women and girls of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Through an eco fashion show and outreach event in Toronto on Saturday evening, October 17, Women and Girls of the World will aim to cultivate awareness and raise funds to aid the girls living on the streets of Kinshasha in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Gift of Hope will be launched at Gibsone Jessop Gallery, Distillery District Bldg. 4-55 Mill Street in Toronto. The event will feature unique eco chic designs from three Canadian eco fashion sources, Hempress, Green is Black, and Emua Fashions.

* Visit Women and Girls of the World for more information and
read this NY Times article on rape victims in the Congo. Don't miss Congo/Women.org as well.

Loup Charmant at D&A LA This Weekend

Loup Charmant will be presenting their gorgeous organic cotton finery at Designers & Agents LA this weekend (October 16 - 18). Be on the lookout for hints of new hues in their honeymoon, resort, lounge offerings ~ all great layering essentials.

Particularly fetching is this hand-carved African bone necklace strung on organic twill tape, available at the Loup Charmant online shop.

I also adore these super flirty, ruffled Bloomers made of the airiest organic cotton.

Macramè Revival

If the art of macramè makes you shudder with flashbacks to overly crafty plant hangers or hippie chic gone awry, rest assured that there is currently a new fashion-forward twist on this ancient art of knotting and micro-webbing.

A group in Milan is organizing Macramè, a cultural project highlighting 'micro-creativity in fashion'. They are currently looking for independent (eco) fashion designers who are interested in showing their macramè-inspired designs at a fashion show in Milano in the end of November.

Visit the Macramè website for details on how to participate. (Do not worry. I will not be reviving the uber-sexy designs depicted in the vintage photos, above and below.)

Topiary Couture ala Viktor & Rolf

Horticouture is always something that ruffles my feathers, but I have to say that I was pretty amused by these colorful topiary-like sculpted gowns that came down the runway at the Viktor & Rolf show at Paris Fashion Week. Tulle netting is hardly sustainable, but I could not help fantasizing about what these same gowns might look like in a French formal garden sculpted out of boxwood shrubbery.

Paris in Flight: Ethical Fashion Show 2009

Eugène Atget's Le Cirque (1924)

The stage is set for the Ethical Fashion Show 2009 in Paris (October 1-4). Be on the look out for magical moments beyond the salons of the Tapis Rouge. *Note: Gareth Pugh design featured below is not an EFS exhibitor, but EFS starlette, Ada Zanditon, did do a stint with him. (Eco fashion trivia for those who are collecting such bits.) More EFS09 loveliness to come.
