EAIRTH Fall/Winter 2011: Elemental Style

Something about EAIRTH's collections always makes me soar sky high while also providing a grounding sensation. Their Spring 2011 collection will be available at BARNEYS New York and Kaight Shop, but I could not resist a peak at these AW 2011 textures and prints. Kaight has some amazing pieces by EAIRTH currently on sale, including the rather unique 'Tiboli Cape' that I tried on and adored l when I visited last fall.

"Extremely heavy-duty and totally appropriate even on the coldest days. It has a large zip down hoodie, concealed zipper and button closures. Two front, breast pockets and two front arm openings. Quilted lining for extra warmth. This piece is made from organic cotton and is 100% chemical-free. Pigments used to achieve the coal color are derived from natural ingredients including ginger, mahogany, and Indian almond. This means that each piece is unique and has an artisanal touch."

Let's just say that it is so much more than a Barbour, and in sync with the current cape trend.

How I Wear Andrea Gutierrez Jewelry

My husband just returned to Sofia after a week in NYC for work. As part of the care package that traveled back to Bulgaria, I received this amazing one-of-a-kind luxe beaded cuff from designer Andrea Gutierrez

How gorgeous is this cuff piece and it's surface texture and topography of recycled beads, gems, and vintage finds? It looks fantastic with my old winter tweed coat as I walk down the cobbled streets of our quiet neighborhood.

Dried vines, dessicated winter leaves, and moody Eastern European skies really come to life when I am wearing it. Andrea's work has been featured in Coco Eco magazine as well as on celebrities and women in the know globally. This was just the sort of wardrobe injection that I needed as I transition to a spring state of mind.

Thank you so much, Andrea, for your support and your hard work as a designer finding innovative ways to recycle cast-off materials while also adding some genuine beauty to our fragile though resilient landscape and the roads we all travel.

Review of Sasha Duerr's Handbook of Natural Plant Dyes

image via Adie + George

Please enjoy my review of Sasha Duerr's amazing new book, The Handbook of Natural Plant Dyes, on EcoSalon. Here is an excerpt from my exclusive interview:

"Sasha is one of the leading experts on natural plant dyes and home-brewed recipes for creating customized color palettes that also touch on eco-literacy and bio-regional awareness. Identifying non-toxic dye materials that reside in your own kitchen, garden, or urban plot goes hand in hand with all of the focus and research one might put into shopping for and preparing organic foods. This is the first book that really highlights why fashion and food are intertwined, and why we can no longer afford to view textiles and clothing as something other than the underlying fiber of our everyday lives and shared communities."

LFW: Beautiful Soul's Painting By Numbers AW2011

Congratulations to Nicola Woods of Beautiful Soul for the creation of her AW2011 collection entitled, Painting by Numbers, "a journey through an English country garden and the eternal appeal of English traditions in order to escape the pace of London, if only for a while."

"A blank organic silk canvas is the starting point, pulling from memory and reminiscing, filling in shapes with colour: swallows, English roses, bluebells, butterflies, dragonflies, and ladybirds. British illustrator Faye West was commissioned to collaborate on these unique prints."

For fans of Beautiful Soul's bespoke, recycled vintage kimono creations, you can learn more about how to order via the designer's website. Nicola's commitment to sustainable fashion is as beautiful and graceful as the pure energy that she has put into all of these latest pieces. What a bold creative journey she has conducted in such a short period time. The perfect compliment to the hectic schedule of London Fashion Week and the long winter journey we have endured and shared.

NYFW: Eko-Lab AW 2011 Collection

Eko-Lab AW 2011

New York Fashion Week / Fall 2011 might officially have come to a close, but sustainable fashion in the NYC region will be continuing on a course of slow fashion goodness for the remainder of the year. My talented designer friends at Eko-Lab, Xing-Zhen Chung-Hilyard and Melissa Kirgan are just getting started on an amazing initiative for locally-inspired  production and community outreach projects aimed at connecting us with our environs.

I wanted to spotlight these beautiful images from Eko-Lab's AW 2011 collection, as they really speak to the local texture and regenerative spirit that is seeping into NYC's sustainable fashion scene. Created as a free-spirited collaboration with Emmy Award winning artist, Jennifer Wen Ma, 'The Lady on White Flees Across the Navy Yard and the Ink Follows', incorporates unique fashion artistry, 100% organic materials, and natural vegetable dyes that work so amazingly with the haunting industrial textures of Brooklyn's dockside and warehouse interiors.

Eko-Lab has currently set up residency in the Brooklyn Navy Yard as part of the Pratt Design Incubator for Sustainable Innovation program. They also participated in Re-made in America at the American Folk Art Museum in NYC on February 10, as part of the official kick-off to New York Fashion Week. Their recently re-designed website will soon feature an online shop as well as a blog that will highlight events and textile outreach efforts. Stay tuned for more information regarding their project for 'Fashioning Self and the Environment' at the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn for Earth Day 2011.

NYFW: RISTO Fall 2011

If ever there was a push for cruelty-free animal prints, I think it would be what reviewers and fashion editors are calling this 'Bambi' print, in RISTO Bimbiloski's Fall 2011 collection. I am not one for animal prints myself, but there is something haunting and poignant about the micro-view of a spotted fawn's pelt. It might subtly suggest that in lieu of the more exotic furs that are still being sent down the runway, there are animals in our own backyards that are very much a part of our visual collective unconscious and perhaps are as endangered and fragile as the rest of the lot. The point being that these are not furs or re-fashioned skins, but a tasteful representation of the beauty and genius patterning of nature under the microscope.

Contemporary fashion that whole-heartedly makes you stop and think is good, provocative fashion in my opinion, whether this be with an aesthetic, political, or environmental twist to the storytelling. Kill us with beauty, not with archaic ideas about luxury and fashioning self

This for me is why RISTO's collections always set the stage for covetable and provocative pieces. Add to this the fair-wage jobs that he has created in his homeland of Macedonia, and fashion forward design has yet again seeped a bit further into new and uncharted territory.
